In this video I’m going to show you how to create and animate a “Knockout” layer using the Advance Blending options in the Layer style window.

The Knockout blend allows you to turn a layer into something similar to a mask. This type of layer punches through all the layer below it and it reveals the bottom-most layer.

Unlike masks, you can apply layer styles to these knockout layers to create more interesting effects.

If you have any comments or questions you can leave them below!

How To Work With Linked Smart Objects In Photoshop

Linked Smart Objects are objects in your Photoshop document that do not live within the file. Instead they reference an external document.

This allows you to have one file that controls one specific object in multiple Photoshop documents. If the linked file is edited, then all the other documents referencing it will reflect the change.

In this video I will show you how to embed a logo across 3 different documents as a Linked Smart Object, and how to update the original file to reflect the changes on all 3 Photoshop documents.

The logo we’ll use in this tutorial will be that of Chronos, a company that my brother-in-law co-funded. Chronos makes a device that turns your regular watch into a smart watch.

You can find out more about Chronos here: WearChronos.com

How To Blur Backgrounds In Photoshop – Shallow Depth of Field Effect

$

0

In this video I’m going to show you how to create a blurry background in Photoshop.

What we’re trying to do here is fake the shallow depth of field focus on a flat photograph.

We’re going to apply the blur by using the Lens Blur Filter which allows you to apply the shallow depth field effect so that some objects in the image are in focus while others are blurred.

You can use a simple selection to determine which areas are blurred, but I recommend using alpha channels since it allows you to easily create more complex selections if your image requires it.

The black areas in the alpha channel are treated as though they’re in focus, and the white areas are treated as if they’re out of focus. The different shades of gray are of course different levels of focus.

How To Create Light Wraps In Photoshop

$

In this tutorial I’m going to show you how to create Light Wraps in Photoshop. Light Wraps (or Light spills) is a technique that video compositers use, that helps them create better blends between the background and foreground.

Usually you would use a program like Adobe After Effects to create a Light Wrap for video footage, but in this tutorial we’ll of course use Photoshop to apply this technique to photographs.

You can think of a Light Wrap as a way to simulate the ambient light in a scene that would be casted on to the subject by the background.

This effect is meant to be very subtle, you may not even notice it, but that’s the whole point. It’s all those little details that make the biggest difference in the end.

In my second example I’ll show you how to apply a light wrap to a scene where the subject is indoors and in a darker area.

I’ll also show you how to add ambient color to the subject so that it blends better in the scene.

Remember that this is a tutorial that is showing you a technique that could be created and applied in many different ways, and that you may find different blending modes, or adjustments that work better in your scene.

It’s more important for you to learn why this effect can help your images, rather than the specific values that I use.

Also keep in mind that this tutorial is all about Light Wraps and we’ll disregard other issues that these composites may have. But I do think that these examples do help illustrate the benefit of Light Wraps.

Cinematic Color Grading (Movie Look Effect) in Photoshop

089-cinematic-color-grading-single

This video is a lot more than a tutorial on cinematic color grading in Photoshop. This tutorial is a comprehensive look at what color grading is, how it works, and how it can be applied in Photoshop. This video tutorial discusses color theory, color correction, and the various adjustment layers that can be used to apply the movie look effect in Photoshop.

Color Theory Behind The Movie Look Effect

In this tutorial, we will focus on applying the popular “teal-and-orange” movie look effect, seen mostly in summer blockbusters and action films. This color grade gives the dark shades of your image a cool teal tone, while the light shades take a warm orange look, especially the skin tones.

This complementary color combination makes the actor stand out in the frame since complementary colors pop when they are used side-by-side.

But color grading is a lot more than making your actors pop. Color grading is a way to enhance the story your image (or video) is trying to convey.

Color Correction vs. Color Grading

In this tutorial, we discuss both color correction and color grading. A color correction allows you to remove any color casts from an image to make it neutral. While color grade adds color to an image, but this is done to help push the story that the image or video is telling. It is a creative choice.

It is very important that your images contain neutral grays and no color casts so that the color grade that you apply looks the way it should. Although this is not a color correction tutorial, we will learn how to do a quick color correction. If you would like to learn more about color correction you could check out my tutorial on color correction .

Adjustment Layers That Can Apply The Movie Look Effect

We will also look at all the different tools that you can use to apply the movie look effect. I prefer to use  the Curves Adjustment Layer, but I will also show you how to use other easier to use adjustment layers in case you are a beginner.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create the duotone effect in Photoshop.

I’ll start by showing you how to use the Duotone mode, and apply the different presets found within this mode. Usually, this mode is reserved for use with commercial printing presses, but I still wanted to give you a peek into this method of creating duotone images.

This Photoshop tutorial is mainly about creating the duotone effect with the Gradient Map Adjustment Layer. Gradient Maps allow you to map colors to an image based on the image’s luminance values. This is what creates the duotone effect. I will also show you how to have better control of the way the duotone effect looks by using a Black and White adjustment layer.

How To Adjust Facial Features In Photoshop

087-adjusting-facial-features-single

In this tutorial, you will learn how to adjust facial features in Photoshop. We will mainly work with two tools: The Puppet Warp Tool and The Liquify Filter. Both of these tools allow you to distort pixels in a controlled manner.

Use The Puppet Warp Tool To Adjust Facial Features

The Puppet Warp Tool is ideal for shaping hair and repositioning arms or legs, but it can also be used for adjusting facial features.

The Puppet warp places a visual mesh around your active pixels which can be distorted by pins that you place on the mesh. When you click and drag on a pin, you distort the image accordingly. You can add as many pins as you like, but you tend to get better results when you use fewer pins.

When you are working with the Puppet Warp tool remember to turn your layer into a Smart Object so that you can work nondestructively.

Adjust Facial Features In Photoshop Using The Puppet Warp

Adjusting Facial Features With Liquify Filter

The Liquify filter lets you push, pull, rotate, reflect, pucker, and bloat any area of an image. Making it the ideal tool for adjusting facial features in Photoshop. Here’s a quick re-cap of the tools found in the Liquify Filter.

Face-Aware Liquify Tool

TheFace-Aware Liquify is a tool that is specifically designed to make adjustments to facial features. I created a tutorial on this tool during the release of Photoshop CC 2015.5, so I will not go over it in this video.

Forward Wrap Tool

The Forward Wrap Tool pushes pixels forward as you drag.

Freeze Mask Tool

This tool allows you to paint areas that you don’t want to be affected by the other distortion tools in the Liquify filter.

Pucker Tool

Moves pixels toward the center of the brush area as you hold down the mouse button, or drag.

Bloat Tool

Moves pixels away from the center of the brush area as you hold down the mouse button or drag. (The opposite of the Pucker Too.)

Twirl Tool

Rotates pixels clockwise as you hold down the mouse button or drag.

Reconstruct The Liquify Adjustments

The Reconstruct slider works a lot like the Fade command in the Edit menu. You can use this slider to fully or partially reverse any distortion made within the Liquify Filter.

keep Adjustments as Subtle as Possible

The image used in this video tutorial does not need any changes. The model’s face looks great the way it is. All the adjustments that we make in this video are not only unnecessary, but they’re also exaggerated and extreme. We will make these drastic changes because it makes it easier to demonstrate how the tools work.

The distortions you create can be subtle or drastic, but try to keep all your facial adjustments as subtle as possible.

Also, keep in mind that when working on any image, you never really want to make a drastic change. Always keep your changes subtle. That way they look more realistic, and you maintain the essence of the person.

In This Tutorial You Will Learn How To:

  • 01:44 – Use Puppet Warp Tool
  • 04:10 – Work with Smart Object
  • 07:10 – Use The Liquify Filter’s Tools:
  • 07:17 – Face-Aware Liquify

Glass Window Reflection Effect In Photoshop

093-window-reflection-single

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a window reflection effect in Photoshop.

This effect will create the illusion that the photo was taken through a glass window. The images used in this Photoshop tutorial are all Adobe Stock images, but you could easily follow along with your photos with no problem at all.

This technique helps give your photo a bit more depth and emotion. Even if you never intend to fake reflections in Photoshop, then still check out this Photoshop video tutorial, it’s a great crash course in how blending modes work, and how to use adjustment layers to control how they blend.

Getting Stated Window Reflection Effect In Photoshop

You will need at least three images to work with: a subject, a reflection image, and a texture image which will be necessary to create a stained glass effect. You could find the photos used in this video on Adobe Stock, or you can simply shoot your own in just a few minutes.

Stock images utilized in this tutorial:

Use Blending Modes To Create A Reflection Effect

This video will teach you to work with blending modes to create the reflection effect. We will do a quick crash course on how blending modes work and how they can help us create a window reflection effect in Photoshop.

Tips and Useful Techniques

This video shares many tips and helpful techniques to adjust the reflection layer to fit the picture perfectly. The first way is to create a new Levels Adjustment Layer to change the luminance values fo the reflection layer to show or hide different areas to make the reflection work better.

This is possible because the reflection layer is set to the Lighten Blending Mode which conceals dark pixels and reveals bright pixels. This means that as pixels become darker than 50% gray, they start disappearing. If they become brighter than 50% gray, then they start appearing.

Another useful technique is to clip a Black & White Adjustment Layer to the reflection layer. Then set the Blending Mode to Luminosity and adjust the luminance values of specific colors to conceal or reveal them.

Add a Color Tint to Enhance The Glass Effect

Have you ever noticed that some glass windows have a green or blue tint? In this video, you will learn how to re-create this effect with a Hue & Saturation Adjustment Layer.

By checking the “Colorize” checkbox you can apply a color to an entire layer, then use the Opacity slider to adjust the intensity of that color.

Applying a Texture To Create a Stained Glass Effect

Perfection doesn’t exist in the real world. Even the cleanest windows should have some dust or stains. To make the composite look more natural, we will use a texture layer to apply subtle stains on the glass.

You don’t need to worry about creating complicated masks since we will use the “Blend If” sliders in the Layers Styles window to selectively hide bright pixels and keep the dark ones.

Creating  Highlights and Flares

This Photoshop tutorial will show you how to create lights shining on the glass with the help of the Linear Dodge (Add) blending mode.

Linear Dodge (Add) Which is one of the 8 special blending modes in Photoshop that gives your different results when you adjust opacity compared to fill. Also, these eight blending modes blend differently when the “Transparency Shapes Layer” checkbox is unchecked in the Layers Style window.

Blur and Add Noise To Create a More Cohesive Image

With the Lens Blur filter, we’ll add a slight blur and add a bit of noise to make the image blend better and make it appear more as a real photo and not a composite. This is a trick that you can use on all your composites, not just this glass window reflection effect.

Other Things You Can Do To Improve The Window Reflection Effect In Photoshop

We did not have enough time in this video to show all the different things that you can do to create a realistic glass window effect.

In your own projects, you may want to try different things to enhance this effect, such as flipping the image horizontally. Especially if there is visible text since in the real world, a reflection will show the text inverted.

You may also want to blur the reflection layer to match the depth of field in the image. Having a reflection that is too sharp may be a give-a-away that the image is a composite.

In This Glass Window Reflection Effect Tutorial You Will Learn How To:

00:46 – Insert Adobe Stock Images
01:36 – Create The Reflection Effect With The Lighten Blend Mode
02:00 – Use the Levels Adjustment Layer To Enhance the Lighten Blend Mode
04:46 – Enhance The Highlights of The Reflection
06:05 – Creating a Green Tint to Enhance a Window Effect
06:48 – Using a Texture To Add Dirty to The Glass
07:56 – Add a Darkening Gradient
08:43 – Create Highlights and Flares
12:06 – Add a Blur and Noise To Make The Composite More Cohesive

The 8 Special Blending Modes In Photoshop

094-8-special-blending-modes-single

In this video, I’m going to show you how Photoshop’s 8 special Blending Modes work.

These 8 special blend modes behave differently when Fill is adjusted, compared to when Opacity is adjusted. This means that for these 8 blending modes, 20 % fill, will look different than 20% opacity. For all of the other blend modes, Opacity looks the same as Fill.

The 8 special blending modes also blend differently when you un-check “Transparency Shapes Layer” checkbox in the Advanced Blending under the Layer Style Window. Using this technique with Linear Dodge (add) will help you create lights, and flares.

The blending modes that are members of this special group are Color Burn, Linear Burn, Color Dodge, Linear Dodge (Add), Vivid Light, Linear Light, Hard Mix, and Difference.

If you want to know more about blending modes, and how they all work, then don’t forget to watch my Photoshop tutorial on blending modes. I cover each blending mode and explain how they work.

96-bokeh-overlays-single

In this tutorial, you will learn to create and apply Bokeh Overlays. We will use photos that are less than perfect to create the overlays, but those bad images will still give us great results.

Create the Bokeh with the Field Blur Filter

The easiest way to create bokeh overlays in Photoshop is to use the Field Blur filter (Filter > Blur Gallery > Field Blur). This blur contains an Effects tab that allows you create bokeh out of the bright areas of the images.

As you will see in this video tutorial, the contents of the photo are not important, as long as the images are not too bright. Here’s an example of what the Effects tab looks like, and the settings that you will need to use to create the bokeh effect.Effects Tab Used To Create Bokeh Overlays

You will need to adjust the Light Bokeh, Bokeh Color, and Light Range to create the Bokeh effect on most of your photos. To Adjust the size of the bokeh add or subtract blur by using the Blur slider. Adding more blur makes the bokeh circles larger.

Apply Bokeh Overlays Using Blending Modes

After you create your bokeh overlay, you can apply it to any image by using the Screen blending mode, which will hide dark pixels and reveal bright ones.

You can then use any adjustment layer that adjusts luminosity to control the blend. In this tutorial, the Levels Adjustment Layer will be used to control the intensity of the bokeh overlay.

Othe Photoshop Tips & Tricks To Enhance This Photo

Although this tutorial is all about bokeh overlays, we will also take the time to enhance this project by creating other fun effects.

Sun Flare Effect

We will use a similar technique as to what you saw in my Shallow Depth of Field Effect tutorial.

sun-flare-photoshop

Apply a Color Tone Using a Selective Color Adjustment Layer

In this tutorial, I will also show you how you can apply a color tone (or color grade) to an image using the Selective Color Adjustment Layer.

If you would like to learn more about using adjustment layers to apply color to images, watch my Cinematic Color Grading Tutorial.

Sharpen Eyes With The Sharpen Tool

This video also contains a section where I show you how to sharpen eyes using the Sharpen tool and the Luminosity blending mode. It’s a quick and straightforward technique that achieves great results!

Lens Blur Filter to Apply Noise

To finalize the image I will show you one of my favorite compositing techniques. By applying film grain or noise to a photo, you make it all tie together, by adding that extra level of realism. I like to use the Lens Blur filter to add noise since I also it also allows you to add a blur at the same time if need be.

Here’s what you will learn in this Bokeh Overlays Tutorial:

  • Place images into Photoshop Documents.
  • Create bokeh with the Field Blur filter.
  • Apply overlays using Blending Modes.
  • Use Levels to adjust Blending Modes.
  • Use Layer Masks to hide the bokeh effect.
  • Distort images to create better bokeh overlays.
  • Composite overlays onto a photo.
  • Create a sun flare.
  • Use Selective Color to apply a color tone.
  • Sharpen eyes with the Sharpen tool.
  • Apply noise using the Lens Blur filter.

Photoshop CC 2017 is officially here, and it rolls out exciting new features for designers and digital photographers. The Photoshop CC 2017 tutorials below, showcase the many improvements and features added to this new release.

Adobe’s new features and enhancements to Photoshop follow two themes. Create a more modern, and more connected Photoshop, lowering the learning barrier for beginners.

Photoshop is now more connected to the Creative Cloud and the other apps in the Adobe ecosystem.

  • A more modern, more connected Photoshop – connection to CC and other apps in the Adobe ecosystem.
  • Lowering the learning barrier for beginners – New things to help users get started and achieve success quickly.
  • Enhancements to recent features –  Select and Mask, Face-Aware Liquify and more.

All the new features from the last release, Photoshop CC 2015.5, all get upgrades and feature enhancements. They provide better results and better performance as well as incorporate feature requests for more control and precision.

Major Updates:

  • Start Workspace
  • New Document Window

Start Workspace – CC Files

The Start workspace was introduced in Photoshop CC during the November 2015 update. This screen is displayed when you first launch Photoshop or whenever no documents are open. Photoshop CC 2017 makes a small but significant changes to this Start Workspace.

As with previous versions of the Start workspace, Photoshop CC 2017 gives you quick access to your recent files. But CC 2017 removes two of the main tabs, the Libraries and Presets tabs, and replaces them with the CC Files tab.

New Document Window

One of the biggest changes in Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 is the completely redesigned New Document dialog box. This redesign still has all the functionality of the legacy dialog box but in a more modern and visual layout.  But this update is much more than a cosmetic change. The New Document dialog now comes loaded with free templates from Adobe Stock that allow you to jump start your creative process right away.

You can launch the New Document window by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl N (Mac: Command N), or by going to File > New.

This redesign New Document window allows you to:

  • Create documents using templates from Adobe Stock, Allowing you to quickly jumpstart the creative process.
  • Save custom presets.
  • Create documents using Blank Document Presets from multiple categories.

If you’re a person who does not like changes, then you can go back to the old New Document dialog box. Simply go into the Preferences dialog by pressing Ctrl K (Mac: Command K).  and under the General tab check the “Use Legacy ‘File New’ Interface” checkbox.

I don’t recommend doing this since this new dialog box contains a lot of useful presents and templates. But this option is available in case you need it.

Photoshop CC 2017 Tutorials - Legacy New Document Dialog

The New Document dialog contains two kinds of presets that will help you get started with your creative process. Blank Document presets, and Photoshop templates.

Blank Document Presets

Blank document templates are similar to what we had in previous versions of Photoshop. They create a blank document based on a pre-defined document size, resolution and color profile.

In Photoshop CC 2017 these blank document templates work the same, but they are organized in a more modern and visual layout.

Photoshop CC 2017 Blank Document Template

Blank document presets for Photo projects.

As with older version of Photoshop CC, you can create your own blank document preset or use one of the many presets found in eight categories:

  • Photo
  • Print
  • Art & Illustration
  • Web
  • Mobile
  • Film & Video

Photoshop Templates

One of the biggest and most notable additions to Photoshop CC 2017 is the starter Photoshop Templates provided within the New Document dialog. These Photoshop Templates are files that you can use to be inspired by or jump-start your creative projects.

The hundreds of free Photoshop Templates are provided by Adobe Stock. They include files that contain brochures, fliers, motion graphics, video overlays and much more.

You can search for a template by selecting a category, Photo, Print, Art & Illustration, Web, Mobile, and Film & Video.

When you choose a category, you can see the list of templates available. Clicking on a template will reveal the template details to the right of the dialog box.

Photoshop CC 2017 - Templates Dialog

Photoshop Templates for Photo projects.

The first time that you use any of these free templates, you will need to download them and license them from Adobe Stock before you can start.

Photoshop CC 2017 - Libraries Panel

Once you have them inside your Creative Cloud library, your will see a blue circle with a check mark.

Downloaded Templates are added to a Creative Cloud Library called Stock Templates.  You can access this library through the Libraries panel from within Photoshop. You can also see your Creative Cloud files through a web browser by going to the assets page of your creative cloud account. https://assets.adobe.com/assets/libraries

By default, the template files use the file extensions .psdt. But they open as a regular .psd file when they are brought into Photoshop. The changes that you make to the .psd while working in Photoshop will not affect the original .psdt template in the Libraries panel.

Photoshop Search Feature

One of the best and most noteworthy additions to Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 is the powerful multi-scope Search. You can think about it as Google inside of Photoshop. It is a great tool for both beginner and experienced users alike.

You can use the Photoshop Search feature to quickly find tools, menus, tutorials, tips, assets, documents, layers and more; all from a unified dialog box. Search integrates with Adobe Stock to help you find assets and Photoshop Templates. Search also integrates with helpx.adobe.com to retrieve relevant help documentation and instructional material.

To bring up the Photoshop Search box press Ctrl F (Mac: Command F).

Note: In previous versions of Photoshop, Ctrl F (Mac: Command F) was the keyboard shortcut for reapplying the last-used filter.  To reapply the last used filter in Photoshop CC 2017 press Ctrl Alt F (Mac: Command Option F).

To start a search simply start typing in the search box. Photoshop will immediately start generating content based on the characters that you enter.

The search query will yield results in three categories: Photoshop, Learn, and Stock. By default, you’ll see results from all the categories, but you can filter by category by clicking on the tab labels below the Search box.

Photoshop CC 2017 Search

Results under the Photoshop category are items that you could find through the Photoshop interface; such as tools, layers, and panels. Results in the Learn category are documentation or instructional material from helpx.adobe.com. Results in the Stock category are assets from the Adobe Stock library.

This is a detailed list of the type of content that you can expect from each category:

  • Photoshop
    • Filters
    • Layers (Active Document)
    • Menu Items
    • New Document Presets
    • Open Documents
    • Panels
    • Recent Files
    • Smart Objects
    • Tools
  • Learn (helpx.adobe.com)
    • Documentation
    • Instructional Material
  • Stock (Adobe Stock)
    • Photos
    • Illustrations
    • Videos
    • Templates

One of the best things about the Photoshop Search feature is that you can perform tasks and operations associated with the search results simply by clicking on them. This is time-saver and it can also help you discover functionality that you may not have known existed.

Clicking on the following types of search results will perform the operation described:

  • Layer: Select the layer and makes it visible in the Layers panel.
  • Tool: Activates the tool and highlights it.
  • Panel: Makes the panel visible and active.
  • Filter Applies the filter or opens the dialog for that filter.
  • Menu Command: Runs the command. (Unless the command is unavailable.)
  • Recent File: Opens the file.
  • Open Documents: Activates the document.
  • Help or Learn Topics: Opens the article in your default browser.
  • Stock Asset: Downloads the image asset into your active Creative Cloud library, and places a Cloud-Linked asset on the canvas.

The Photoshop Search has an advanced algorithm that allows the use of synonyms. For example, searching for “Retouch” will return search results that are relevant to retouching. This includes tools such as the Clone Stamp Tool, Healing Brush Tool, and Patch Tool.

The Search feature supports all languages that Photoshop CC 2017 supports; though the search results may vary by language, because of the differences in each language.

Some of the items that the Photoshop Search does not include are library elements or individual styles.

SVG Color Fonts

The biggest enhancement to Type in Photoshop CC 2017 is the addition of SVG Color Fonts to the list of supported font types.  SVG fonts support multiple colors and gradients in a single glyph.

Photoshop CC 2017 also ships with the Trajan Color Concept and EmojiOne font. So you can now use Emojis in Photoshop! 🙂 🙂 🙂

When working with SVG fonts, it’s important to note that you will need to open your Glyph Panel (Window > Glyphs) to have access to the full range of characters available.

This is because many of these fonts do not have corresponding keys to the characters found in the font. In some cases, keyboard entries may work, but will only display characters using one color scheme. Even though many others are included in the font.

For example, the Trajan Color Concept font includes 20 different stylistic sets which are available only through the Glyphs panel.

The following icons are used to indicate the type of font:

  • Multipl Master - Photoshop CC 2017 Multiple Master
  • OpenType SVG - Photoshop CC 2017 OpenType SVG (New in Photoshop CC 2017)
  • OpenType - Photoshop CC 2017 OpenType
  • Type 1 - Photoshop CC 2017 Type 1
  • TypeKit - Photoshop CC 2017 Typekit Fonts
  • TrueType - Photoshop CC 2017 TrueType

Composite Glyphs

Another example of combining glyphs can be seen when you combine one of the single-person, yellow-faced characters with any of the five, round, skin-colored characters.

In this example, the original person-character will remain, but it will be recolored to match the skin-color selected. Note that this does NOT work with composites made of more than one person.

You can select a combination of glyphs to create a composite. For example, you can create country flags or change the skin color of emojis.

Country Flags

Another feature of SVG fonts, specifically, EmojiOne is that you can composite new glyphs using a combination of glyphs.

The “letters” in EmojiOne do NOT correspond to these same keys on the keyboard. If you use the Glyph Panel to add two letters which make up a given country’s ISO code, then the two letters will combine and result in the flag of that country.

For example, selecting “U” and “S” the Glyphs panel would result in the American flag. MX would give you the Mexican flag, and DE would give the German flag.

These “composites” can be broken back into their constituent pieces. For instance, if you insert the character for a given national flag, then pressing the Backspace key will break this composite into individual, single-letter glyphs. The American flag will turn to the letter U for example.

Character Varients

You can match the skin colored characters to five available skin tones. To do so selected the tone that you like from the Glyphs panel

Note:
Character Varients do not work with glyphs that contain more than one person.
